Do you know what 30 minutes of exercise five times a week can do for you? It eases arthritis aches, maintains bone mass, acts as a sleep aid and keeps the mind more vigilant.

Keeping our hearts healthy is especially important for us seniors. Cardiovascular exercises, which increase heart rate, keep our hearts in shape. Regular exercise has also been shown to lower blood pressure, freeing our heart from some of the effort in moving blood through our system.

There are activities that you enjoyed doing when you were young. However you think since you have aged these are not for you anymore. But this is where you are wrong many seniors are rediscovering old sports and activities which they once enjoyed and can be done with their current bodies. The agility and range of motion which scares seniors out of doing activities, which they once relished, does not have to be an issue if you respect the limits of your current self and take your sport little by little. These are the three topmost activities that most seniors enjoy:

Gardening is a great outdoor activity for seniors

Gardening is not a mere outdoor recreational activity. It connects us with nature and helps us to create something beautiful. While gardening, not only do we work our body, we soothe our senses and spirit. In the words of Thomas Jefferson “No occupation is as delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden. I am still devoted to the garden. But though an old man, I am but a young gardener."

How active life will just not let you get old!

Old age often surprises the body by introducing us the new inabilities and limitations. But that is often used as a weapon against physical activity. The trick to defeat age is to get round any limitation and stay active. Further, we should be aware that there are many who overcome their conditions, not always by eliminating the condition, but by working the body much as you can. There are many survivors of cancer, for example, who motivate themselves past significant degrees of fatigue, nausea and depression by working back toward wellness in anyway they can. Getting older or dealing with disease or illness is a setback meant to be overcome as much as possible, rather than being a pass to not stay active. Expectations have to be put in the parameters that your body is willing to manage at the time. Accepting what you have and moving on with those particular limitations will improve the way you age.

Why swimming is a great workout idea

Swimming is considered a great exercise for seniors for numerous reasons. It has the second lowest impact rate for injuries, walking being the first. Water based activity is good for both strength training and aerobic training. Water also provides more options for those who are extremely lacking in general fitness or have a previous injury that makes land based activity difficult

Stay active, that’s the only secret for a healthy life

With age our bodies want to rest. But being active is the only way one can stay healthy and live longer. A regular exercise routine not only keeps excess weight away but also strengthens our bones and muscles, lowers the risk of heart disease, controls high cholesterol and high blood pressure and acts as a natural sleep aid. The risk of diabetes and even some kinds of cancer can also be lessened by regular exercise.

Ways to find the right fitness program.

The word ‘fit’ has multiple definitions. For some it is the ability to go on with their daily life properly, for others it could be their appearance. Some may define ‘fit’ as medical well being like the right cholesterol and blood pressure. But almost all ‘fit’ people have these attributes in common: they have energy, can get everything done that they need to on average and they are satisfied with how their clothes fit them
